**Authority and Godly Living** Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord, Beloved, I write to you concerning the manner in which we, as followers of Christ, are called to live under authority, both heavenly and earthly. These teachings, which I have written in my letters, are not burdensome but are meant to guide you in honoring God in all areas of life. Let me remind you of these truths as recorded in my letters to the Romans, to Titus, and to Timothy. ### **Submission to Governing Authorities (Romans 13:1-5)** In my letter to the Romans, I wrote: *"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment"* (Romans 13:1-2). God has ordained the authorities that exist for the purpose of maintaining order and justice. Rulers are God’s servants, meant to punish wrongdoing and reward good. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to them, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. However, this submission is not absolute; it is grounded in the higher obedience we owe to God. If earthly authorities command what is contrary to God’s law, we must obey God rather than men, as our allegiance to Christ is supreme (Acts 5:29). ### **Living as God’s People** To Titus, I exhorted: *"Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people"* (Titus 3:1-2). In this way, our lives as believers bear witness to the transforming power of the gospel. We were once foolish, disobedient, and enslaved by passions and pleasures, but by the kindness and love of God, we have been saved—not because of our works but by His mercy (Titus 3:4-5). Therefore, as God’s people, we are called to live uprightly, showing respect and honor to those in authority while exemplifying humility and gentleness toward all. ### **Prayers for All People and Leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2)** To Timothy, my beloved child in the faith, I urged: *"I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way"* (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Prayer is a vital part of our responsibility as believers. By praying for those in authority, we acknowledge God’s sovereignty over all rulers and ask Him to guide them so that we may live in peace and continue to proclaim the gospel without hindrance. ### **The Common Theme** In all these passages, the underlying principle is this: as followers of Christ, we are called to live lives of humility, submission, and respect for authority, reflecting the character of our Lord. Whether we are dealing with earthly rulers or spiritual leaders, our conduct must glorify God and adorn the doctrine of our Savior in every way (Titus 2:10). ### **A Final Exhortation** Therefore, I charge you, brothers and sisters, to walk in obedience to God’s Word, honoring those in authority, praying for their guidance, and living in a manner that reflects the grace of God. Let your lives be marked by peace, godliness, and dignity, so that through your witness, others may come to know the truth of the gospel. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God
